Lamprey Health Care’s Nashua Center recently received a grant from the Jewish Women’s Giving Circle to support Reach Out & Read, an early literacy program adopted by the Nashua Center that promotes early reading habits and a lifetime love of books. Reach Out & Read focuses on the healthy development of children by engaging parents about the importance of reading aloud to their children, and by providing an age-appropriate book to every pediatric patient during their well child visit at Lamprey Health Care’s Nashua Area Health Center.
The Jewish Women’s Giving Circle, a small women’s group engaged in assisting social agencies meet community needs, held “Breakfast & Books” on June 6th to raise awareness of the importance and impact of early literacy. Over $2,000.00 in funds were collected from members and guests who attended “Breakfast & Books” and donated to Lamprey Health Care’s Nashua Area Health Center. These funds will be used to purchase brand new books to be given to pediatric patients through the Reach Out & Read Program, as well as outfit Lamprey Health Care’s new Nashua Center with furniture, wall art, bookshelves, and educational activities for the new Children’s Waiting Room.
Currently located at 10 Prospect Street, Lamprey Health Care is building a new center located at 22 Prospect Street that will provide additional space for patient care, programs and services to better serve the Nashua Community by meeting the increase in demand for affordable health care.
Reach Out and Read prepares America’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together. Doctors, nurse practitioners, and other medical professionals incorporate Reach Out and Read’s evidence-based model into regular pediatric checkups, by advising parents about the importance of reading aloud and giving developmentally-appropriate books to children. The program begins at the 6-month checkup and continues through age 5, with a special emphasis on children growing up in low-income communities. Families served by Reach Out and Read read together more often, and their children enter kindergarten with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills, better prepared to achieve their potential.
